This Senior Technical Leadership role within Research and Development enables Keurig Dr Pepper to delight consumers with Packaging for Innovation and Sustainability across core brands, existing pipelines, and new platforms.  You will be a natural collaborator, with experience in emerging packaging technologies, material research and development, and commercialization to inspire teams and management on the framing and execution of future technologies. This role positions Keurig Dr Pepper to develop and commercialize new packaging technologies in collaboration with internal and external partners to delight our consumers and customers.

This important and impactful role within Packaging Innovation enables Keurig Dr. Pepper to deliver the most Innovative and Sustainable Packaging to partners, customers, and consumers. The Principal Material Scientist will:

  1. Through scientific method and technical excellence, develop new Packaging Material technologies across Bottle, Can, K-Cup, Pouch, and Flexible pack formats meeting Quality, Cost, and Performance criteria
  2. Scout and Develop Packaging material technologies, in close collaboration with Procurement, Supply Chain, R&D, and Marketing
  3. Advance our business priorities through technical excellence and leadership, fueling our Innovation agenda and meeting or exceeding our Sustainability commitments

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Principal Material Scientist is responsible and accountable for Packaging Material Technology development related to the Beverage Pack portfolio. The position will focus on material scouting, technology mapping, and translating new-age materials to the KDP Packaging portfolio across Plastic Bottles, K-Cup Pod, Paperboard, and Flexible Film structures. There will be strong emphasis on cross-functional collaboration to develop the Material Technology and Business Case for commercialization and launch.

  • Develop Packaging technology solutions across Plastic, Biopolymers, Compostable, Post Consumer Recyclable (PCR) and execute across Bottle, Can, K-Cup Pod, Pouch, Flexible, and Paper pack formats
  • Execute proof-of-concept experiments by conducting product-package interaction studies, and sample characterization. Conduct benchmark studies of material candidates, compositions, material structures, and concepts. Scale-up feasible concepts for production testing and commercialization.
  • Lead co-development of new Packaging materials with Suppliers, Start-ups, and Universities, based on business needs, challenges, consumer insights and brand vision
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to develop holistic business case proposals for new Packaging material technologies through Desirability, Viability, and Feasibility lens
  • Understand consumers, customers, and competitors & translate needs to key technical deliverables on Sustainability and Innovation projects
  • Create and manage timelines, actions plans, reports, and presentations for key stakeholder and business updates
  • Effectively educate, coach, and mentor internal stakeholders and peers on packaging material technologies
  • Map and monitor industry research developments and trends, scientific literature and IP especially in Bio-polymers, Flexibles, and Post Consumer Recyclable (PCR) to identify opportunities for partnerships and lead KDPs material technology development
  • Develop Intellectual Property to protect material science developments and competitive advantage for KDP
  • Positively influence and engage in a creative, performance driven culture



Requirements

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MS / PhD Material Science, Polymer Chemistry, Plastics Engineering
  • 5+ years in the field focusing on material development with concentration in plastics, biopolymers, and other packaging material
  • Experience with chemical development, processing, and thermoplastics application
  • Experience with thermoset, injection, & stretch blow molding applications. Additional experience with hot fill, cold fill, retort and aseptic packaging a plus.
  • Experience working with Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG) and food/beverage a plus
  • Strong track record of championing innovation and sustainable packaging within organizations
  • Successfully executed programs from idea, concept development, testing, validation to market commercialization
  • Strong business acumen, technical development skills, and understanding of industry
  • Ability to travel is required
